Not my favorite book
I know I will probably make people mad because this book is apparently beloved by everyone, but "Goodnight Moon" just weird. And I quote: "Goodnight Nobody" (that page is blank), "Goodnight mush." Of course, because you're saying goodnight to a bowl full of mush. The reason for the mush, presumably, is to rhyme with the old lady whispering hush. Why this poor child has all these strange things in his room is beyond me. And although the book rhymes, it doesn't have an obvious rhythm. (I think most baby books are written in iambic pentameter, which is easy on the ears.)
I don't think Jack notices or cares just yet, but it matters to me. My two favorite books to read him are "The Bedtime Book" by Boynton (you know, the woman with all those funny animals? Like the worm with a boot and a hat?) and "How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms?"
I just don't know how "Goodnight Moon" got to be so popular. Perhaps someone out there will enlighten me.
In more important news, we visited Elissa's new baby Jake today. I forgot how small a newborn baby is, but Jake was happy to show me. Light as a feather, that boy, with a tiny little voice. So cute. Here he was trying very hard to be social and awake and not doing a very good job:

And here's the new mama, who looks fantastic

And the obligatory shot with Jack the behemoth standing nearby

It's just hard to believe they grow that much in 8 months.
Joe came home early tonight, just in time for Jack's bath. We got him a new hooded towel - this one is like a shark. Just too cute for words.

As Jack gets older, he's starting to look more and more like himself, whatever that will be. But I keep catching glimpses of my family members in him. Recently he's been looking a lot like my Grandpa Avery, but in this shot I think his eyes look exactly like my cousin Christy. Pretty obscure, I know, but isn't he cute anyway?

Brooke, You have good taste and don't let all those sheep tell you otherwise. Once a book is deemed a "Classic," no one dares say otherwise. It is a stupid book and an insult to children and their innate sense of good literature. It is the adults who say it is so great. Besides, it is the sound of your voice that he loves. Not the number of syllables in a rhyme! Keep up the good work.
On the subject of sleep...my grandson has his own cycle from birth and nothing ever change it. He gave up morning naps at about five months and had to be cajoled into a ten minute afternoon nap by the time he was one. He thrived and grew and was always cheerful, while those about him bumped into walls and fell into bed at night. All is forgotten as he now is raising his own youngster, who also requires very little sleep. Sorry...Hugs, Cousin Jan

I dug goodnight moon because of it's wierdness. The coolest book that we had was "Princess Prunella and the Purple Peanut". Yup, lots of "P"s in this one. I also dug "Fox in Sox" which I can almost recite from memory. I wonder if you will read Potter aloud to your children as I did...
Please keep finding resemblances to family members in Jack. You may find it problematic if you start seeing features in him that remind you of the mailman or the yard guy...
